Start here: what an affiliate creator does

What the work looks like, what you need to begin, and honest expectations before you put in any time.

An affiliate creator recommends products in short videos or posts and shares a special link. When someone buys through that link, the store or brand may pay the creator a commission: a percentage of the sale, set by the affiliate program.

That's the whole model. There is no stock to buy, nothing to ship and no customer service. The work is choosing good products, making short videos people find useful, being honest about the link, and doing it regularly.

What the work looks like

  • Choosing products you actually know, that fit the people who watch you.
  • Making short vertical videos: show the product, show it in use, give an honest opinion.
  • Posting regularly, and putting your affiliate link where people can find it.
  • Saying clearly, every time, that you may earn a commission (#ad).
  • Looking at what worked, and adjusting.

What you need to begin

  • A phone that records video. A recent smartphone is enough: you don't need a camera, lights or a microphone to start.
  • An account on at least one short-video platform, such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts or Facebook.
  • At least one affiliate program you have joined. The next lesson explains how.
  • A few hours a week, and patience.
  • To be an adult: the affiliate programs Vidmerce works with only accept people 18 or older.

Honest expectations

Results vary a lot. Many people earn little at first, and some earn nothing for months. A commission is a small share of each sale; most people who watch a video never click, and most people who click never buy. It usually takes many videos before you learn what your audience responds to.

Be wary of anyone who promises fast or effortless results, shows screenshots of their commissions to sell you a course, or tells you to quit your job. Affiliate content is real work, closer to a small side project than a shortcut.

What you can control is the quality and honesty of what you post: useful videos, clear disclosure, and products you would recommend to a friend. That is what this guide is about.

How this guide is organized

  1. Join affiliate programs, so you have links to share.
  2. Disclose every time: the rules in the US and Canada.
  3. Pick products worth recommending.
  4. Film with your phone.
  5. Write hooks and captions that don't overclaim.
  6. Post and share your link.
  7. Read your numbers and improve.
  8. Stay within the rules: platforms, programs, music and privacy.
  9. How Vidmerce helps at each step.

Each lesson takes a few minutes. Read them in order the first time, then come back to any of them when you need it.

This guide is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Affiliate programs and platforms change their rules often: always check their current terms on their own websites.
